Scotland 18-11 Samoa
Scotland wing Sean Lamont tries to escape the Samoan defence
Scotland: 18 (8)
Tries: Hogg, Di Rollo
Con: Paterson
Pens: Paterson 2
Samoa: 11 (8)
Try: Al Tuilagi
Pens: Warren 2
A Marcus Di Rollo try six minutes from time saw Scotland sneak an unconvincing victory over Samoa at Murrayfield.

Alesani Tuilagi's early try gave the visitors hope of a first ever win over the Scots, who drew level with a score from flanker Ali Hogg.

Two penalties apiece either side of half-time for Chris Paterson and Roger Warren left the sides tied at 11-11.

But a charge from the impressive Sean Lamont allowed replacements Mike Blair and Phil Godman to put Di Rollo over.

It was hardly the confidence-booster Scotland were hoping for, however, ahead of their appointment with the All Blacks next Saturday.

Samoa got off to a great start with a try from one of Leicester's Tuilagi clan, 18-stone wing Alesana, after just five minutes.

A chip over the top from fly-half Tanner Vili appeared to be claimed by Chris Cusiter, but the ball squirmed out of the Scotland scrum-half's grasp and Tuilagi touched down.

The visitors, warming up for their visit to Twickenham next Saturday, demonstrated their trademark relish for physical confrontation on numerous occasions.

Prop Cencus Johnston was fortunate to escape censure for a high tackle on Scotland captain Jason White, while centre Anitelia Tuilagi took out Lamont with another late hit.

Lamont and brother Rory both showed glimpses of their running skills but it was a driving maul that brought Scotland an equalising try in the 19th minute, flanker Hogg emerging with the ball.

Alesana Tuilagi almost grabbed a second try for Samoa moments later after a barnstorming run through half-a-dozen Scots, only for his chip to bounce back off the crossbar.

Scotland enjoyed 70% of the territory in the opening half but were only level at 8-8 at the interval after Warren and Paterson swapped penalties in the second quarter.

Warren missed an opportunity to nudge the visitors ahead on the resumption with a penalty that dropped just short.

Scotland briefly found some attacking momentum and twice came close to crossing the Samoan line.

Hogg was forced into touch in the left corner, while Rory Lamont - who received a blow to the face in touching down which forced him off - grounded the ball but Andrew Henderson's pass was adjudged forward.

Paterson did edge the Scots ahead with another penalty to take him to 400 points in Test rugby, second only to Gavin Hastings in the Scottish record books.

But coach Frank Hadden opted to changed both half-backs on the hour, Blair and Phil Godman replacing Cusiter and Dan Parks, and the move brought dividends six minutes from time.

Another powerful burst from Sean Lamont off his left wing saw Blair and Godman combine to send Di Rollo over in the left corner, to the relief of most of the paltry 14,718 spectators.
