Saqlain celebrates the wicket of Alec Stewart

With only the second ball of his new spell Waqar Younis uprooted Graham Thorpe's off-stump and soon after Wasim Akram dismissed Marcus Trescothick.

The England opener had made a brilliant 117 before he gloved a short ball from Akram to Rashid Latif, who took a good catch down the leg-side.

It once again raised the hopes of the tourists, with England now conceivably just aiming to bat out time and earn a draw.

England's middle and lower order then collapsed in much the same manner as they had in the first innings.

Saqlain trapped Alec Stewart lbw without playing a shot, before Nick Knight's miserable Test return was complete as he fell without scoring.

But replays showed not only should the delivery have been called a no-ball but that it also looked to be going over the top of the stumps.

Waqar removed Atherton in both innings

A number of no-balls were missed by the umpires, with many leading to wickets.

Ian Ward was caught behind off Saqlain and Andrew Caddick fell first ball as the off-spinner knocked back his off-stump.

Dominic Cork and Darren Gough then threatened to save the game for England, before Cork fell lbw to Saqlain.

And Waqar crowned the victory by removing Gough.

England had begun the final day on 85 without loss, still with hopes of pursuing the target of 370 for victory.

Atherton is clean bowled by Waqar

Trescothick and Atherton had put them in a good position from which to attack with an opening stand of 146.

But Atherton fell just before lunch as Waqar got a ball to reverse swing through the Lancastrians defence.

Trescothick completed his first Test century on home soil but England's pursuit of the target slowed in the afternoon session.

Michael Vaughan fell to Abdur Razzaq for 14 as the Yorshireman got a thin edge through to Rashid Latif behind the wicket.

But at that stage there was still little sign of the drama to come.
