Inzamam inspires Pakistan
 Inzamam bows out as Hoggard takes his second wicket

Click here A fine century from Inzamam-ul-Haq inspired Pakistan to a solid total of 370 for 8 on the first day of the second Test. England, seeking their fifth successive series win, had the visitors struggling at 92 for 4 just after lunch. But Inzamam shared a partnership of 141 with Younis Khan to avert a collapse and put Pakistan right back in the game. Yorkshire pacemen Matthew Hoggard took his first Test wicket, and ended the day with three for 79. Andrew Caddick also claimed three, and Darren Gough took two, but each was costly as Pakistan kept their run rate at more than four per over. Hoggard took the wicket England most needed when he finally dismissed Inzamam for 114. The Pakistan vice-captain was caught by Ian Ward off a loose shot as he went for yet another boundary. His exemplary innings included 18 fours and a six in 153 balls. It was his 13th Test century. It could have been so different if an overstep by Dominic Cork had not prevented Inzamam's dismissal with the first ball after lunch. Regrets On 31, he edged Cork to wicketkeeper Alec Stewart, but the Derbyshire man was no-balled in breezy conditions. The hosts were soon regretting the missed opportunity as Inzamam reached the 30th half-century of his career. He brought up his 50 partnership with Younis by hitting medium pacer Marcus Trescothick for six.
Earlier, Pakistan captain Waqar Younis had won the toss and opted to bat, hoping to get runs on the board and put England under pressure. But the hosts took three wickets in the first session which started 30 minutes late because of rain. England made the breakthrough in only the second over when Caddick dismissed Abdur Razzaq for one run with six scored. He was nearly out first ball when he was dropped by Michael Atherton at second slip off Gough's first over. But Razzaq, not a natural opener, then diverted a pacy delivery from Caddick onto his own stumps. Gough grabbed a wicket with 38 scored when Faisal Iqbal failed to get on top of his short delivery and was caught by Michael Vaughan at short leg. Valuable Caddick struck again just before lunch to remove opener Saeed Anwar, caught well at first slip by Mike Atherton. He had reached 29 in a valuable partnership with Inzamam. They steadied the ship with a glut of boundaries as the Pakistani run rate reached 4.6 and stayed high. Inzamam passed the 5,000 Test runs mark with a four off Gough, and another in the 13th over brought up the Pakistan 50.
He had made only four when he offered Knight a catch at second slip with Pakistan on 92. Azhar Mahmood reached 37 before becoming Matthew Hoggard's third victim of the afternoon. His delivery failed to generate much movement but the Pakistani No 7 pushed it to solitary slip Nick Knight. The dismissal ended a useful partnership between Mahmood and Rashid Latif, who compiled a fine half-century. Wasim Akram was out for 16 as with Pakistan on 357. Stewart took the catch as he tried to slash Gough through the offside only to find a top edge. But Pakistan's tail continued to make England's tiring bowlers work hard, and Latif ended the day on 64, with Saqlain Mushtaq on two.
