Social life At the heart and soul of Soweto's social life are drinking establishments known as shebeens. They arose when alcohol was illegal, and served homemade brews made with sorghum, maize, brown bread and sugar. These days shebeens are licensed, although some are little more than a backyard garage or side-street hangout. |
