Leeds to offer Beckford new deal

Leeds United are set to offer 25-year-old striker Jermaine Beckford a new contract to stay at Elland Road.

Last season's top scorer has 12 months left on his current deal and his agent had hinted he was prepared to move on if a new deal was not forthcoming.

Leeds chief executive Shaun Harvey told BBC Radio Leeds: "I've actually spoken with Jermaine's agent today [Tuesday].

"We will be forwarding an offer of a new contract to Jermaine now that our divisional status is known."

Earlier, Beckford's agent Nick Rubery had told BBC Radio Leeds that he had been trying to thrash out a new deal for his client for the last six months.

He claimed that in the absence of a new contract, Beckford's departure was inevitable.

"I can't see any other conclusion now," said Rubery.

"If there's no new offer coming in then Jermaine wants to know where he's going to be in the next two or three years.

"It's looking increasingly unlikely that it's going to be at Leeds United."

But Harvey said that he believed Beckford wanted to stay at Elland Road and was confident they could entice him to remain.

"I'd be disappointed if any Leeds fans interpreted what has been attributed to his agent as Jermaine's desire to leave.

"I understand Jermaine's desire to have his future resolved but I think there's plenty of time for us to resolve this matter over the summer."

Beckford has scored 54 goals in 99 appearances for the club since signing from Wealdstone in 2006 and has attracted the interest of other clubs.

He missed a penalty in Thursday's League One play-off semi-final, second leg draw against Millwall that saw Leeds miss out on promotion to the Championship.

Harvey said: "Having seen Jermaine's reaction at the end of Thursday's game where he was virtually inconsolable, that didn't look like the reaction of a person who was desperate to get away from a football club."
