Everton hope Tim Cahill will sign new four-year deal

Everton are confident of finalising a long-term contract with Australia international midfielder Tim Cahill.

The 30-year-old has scored 56 goals in 209 appearances for the Toffees since joining them from Millwall in 2004.

"We are at an advanced stage of negotiation with Tim and his representatives," Everton chief executive Robert Elstone revealed.

"We would be hopeful of an extension to his current deal and to put pen to paper on a new four-year contract."

Cahill missed his side's final Premier League game of the season - the 1-0 home win against Portsmouth - because of a minor groin strain.

But he will soon join up with Australia ahead of this summer's World Cup finals in South Africa and Everton are eager to complete his new deal before he leaves.

Toffees boss David Moyes has spoken of his determination to commit his key players to the club during the close season.

He is also continuing discussions with South Africa international midfielder Steven Pienaar and England under-21 midfielder Jack Rodwell.

Both players are likely to attract interest from other clubs over the summer - and Pienaar's stock could rise if he plays well for his country as they host the biggest tournament in football.
