St Paul's beat Northerners to reach Wheway Cup final

Jersey Football Combination

St Paul's reached their third final of the season with two goals in the last 17 minutes against Guernsey's Northerners in the Wheway Cup.

Craig Leitch headed home Jack Cannon's cross on 73 minutes and Mark Lucas made it 2-0 just five minutes later.

It had been an even match up to then, with North proving very difficult to break down.

St Paul's will now meet either Grouville or Portuguese Club in the final on Tuesday, 20 April.

Chances were few and far between and it took a piece of inspired play to break the deadlock.

Cannon provided a perfect cross from the left, with Leitch timing his run to perfection and nodding home in the corner of the net.

Within five minutes the lead was doubled with the damage to North coming from the opposite wing.

Scott Devlin provided the pass from the right and a deft flick from Mark Lucas was enough to clinch the tie.

We're very pleased to be through to another final - I think that little bit of class showed in the end

St Paul's manager Craig Culkin

For North coach Mick Le Prevost, his side came with a gameplan that worked perfectly for the first 70 minutes.

"There was nothing in the game until they scored a cracking goal," he said. "I thought it was an even game even though we lost 2-0 but it still could have gone either way.

"I'm so proud of those players because today we really gave them a good game."

St Paul's manager Craig Culkin also thought North put up a great fight, against arguably the best side in the Channel Islands.

"We never started playing for the first hour but that's all credit to North - they worked really hard and really frustrated us.

"I said [at half-time] they just to be a little bit patient, take a little more care with the passing, decision making and execution."

"But we're very pleased to be through to another final - I think that little bit of class showed in the end."

St Paul's have already won the Charity Cup and reached the final of the Jeremie Cup.

In the Premiership's only match, St Ouen came from two goals down at the break to grab a point in a 2-2 draw at home to St Peter.
