Brentford 1-2 Cambridge
Cambridge go through on the golden goal rule
Substitute Omer Riza converted a golden-goal winner to send battling Cambridge through to the LDV Vans Trophy southern area final with a fine win over Brentford. The Bees had taken a 1-0 lead courtesy of Mark McCammon's 43rd minute header from Steve Hunt's cross, but failed to cash in on their superiority. Striker Rowan Vine had two second-half efforts blocked as the Bees pressed for a decisive second goal. However, they paid the price in the second minute of stoppage time when striker Dave Kitson scored at the second attempt to set up extra time. Brentford substitute Rob Traynor went close in the opening seconds of extra-time, but it was the U's who bagged the winner in the 98th minute. Riza broke away from Scott Marshall, cut outside Leo Roget, and drilled the ball home at the near post to put Cambridge just one step away from a return to Cardiff. Brentford: Paul Smith, Dobson, Frampton, Roget, Marshall, O'Connor, Williams, Jay Smith, Hunt, McCammon, Vine. Subs: Julian, Traynor, Fieldwick, Peters, Hughes. Cambridge Utd: Marshall, Tann, Murray, Goodhind, Duncan, Guttridge, Wanless, Fleming, Youngs, Kitson, Chillingworth. Subs: Brennan, Revell, Nacca, Bridges, Riza. Referee: P Walton (Northamptonshire).
