Harris hits the jackpot
"Terrible Tim" could not live up to his nickname
Maurice Harris carried off $100,000 after emerging triumphant from the 'Fistful of Dollars' heavyweight tournament in Atlantic City.
Harris saw off Anthony Thompson in Saturday's final on a majority decision after beating Gerald Nobles and Israel Garcia in his other three-round bouts. Former world champion "Terrible" Tim Witherspoon, who knocked out Frank Bruno in 1986, fell at the first hurdle. And, after losing a close split decision to Garcia, the 44-year-old grandfather announced his retirement - again. "Actually, I was retired before this, but I wanted to take a shot at the money," said Witherspoon. Tournament favourite Jeremy Williams also made an early exit as he was soundly beaten by Thompson.
Controversial scoring allowed Williams to escape with a draw but Thompson was given the victory for landing more punches. Thompson then beat Derrick Jefferson on a unanimous points verdict in the semi-final. Jefferson had stopped Ray Austin in his opening match, dropping his opponent with a left hook early in round two. The pay-per-view event was the brainchild of promoter Cedric Kushner. The fighters boxed three-round exhibition matches and the results did not count against their records. Before each match the contenders emerged from a cloud of smoke and rap groups performed between fights.
