The three acts each took two of the 15 prizes at the UK's leading music awards, held at Earl's Court.

But the night will be remembered for on-stage rows as Rolling Stones guitarist Ronnie Wood squared up to a club DJ on stage, and Williams challenged Oasis singer Liam Gallagher to a televised fight.

Ronnie Wood: Row with club DJ on stage

Williams - who also dominated last year's awards - won both Best British Single and Video for She's The One.

He marked his triumph by goading Gallagher - who is on tour with Oasis in Japan - from the stage.

He swore as he offered Gallagher a �100,000 bet for a televised fight between them - continuing a row sparked by Noel Gallagher calling him a "fat dancer".

"So, anybody like to see me fight Liam? Would you pay to come and see it? Liam, a hundred grand of your money and a hundred grand of my money.

"We'll get in a ring and we'll have a fight and you can all watch it on TV."

He told BBC Radio 1: "He's not very clever, so I'd win hands down."

There was more drama as Rolling Stones guitarist Ronnie Wood squared up to club DJ Brandon Block on stage.

Macy Gray won two awards

Block invaded the stage as Wood and actress Thora Birch presented the best soundtrack prize to Notting Hill.

The rock veteran ended up throwing a drink over Block, and the two swore at each other as security guards pulled the DJ off.

Later, Wood also swore during a live BBC Radio 1 interview about the incident.

Macy Gray, who received her title from Australian performers Kylie Minogue and Natalie Imbruglia, said her award meant "the whole world to me".

Best British Dance Act was won by The Chemical Brothers, who took the title with Tom Rowlands from the duo telling the audience: "Thanks a lot. This is a great end to a good year."

Travis' double triumph - winning Best British Album and Best British Group - caps a successful year for them - The Man Who was 1999's biggest-selling album by a UK act.

Picking up his first award, nervous singer Fran Healy said: "They say that liquid paraffin is the best cure for constipation, but I think winning a Brit Award comes close."

The Spice Girls performed live after picking up their Outstanding Contribution To British Music prize - without former member Geri Halliwell.

The award marks worldwide record sales of 35 million and singles sales of 18 million in under four years.

As the group headed on stage, the audience chanted "Geri, Geri". Scary Spice Mel G offered an olive branch to their former bandmate, saying: "We've got to say a big, big thank you to Geri because without her we wouldn't be able to do this."

They performed a salsa-filled version of Spice Up Your Life and a rendition of Goodbye, which ended with the girls in tears and hugging each other.

Not to be outdone, Halliwell put on a raunchy show to perform her new single Bag It Up. She appeared beneath a logo reading Girl Powder - a dig at the Spice Girls' Girl Power slogan.

She also had four plump women pushing trolleys around, shopping for men.

Former Spice Girls manager Simon Fuller's new act, S Club 7, took the Best British Newcomer prize.

Boy band Five dedicated their Best Pop Act prize to former manager Bob Herbert, who died in a road accident last summer. Herbert helped form the group which became the Spice Girls in 1993 with his son Chris.

Still a winner: Best British Male Tom Jones

Rock veterans Queen kicked off the event with Five - Roger Taylor, Brian May and John Deacon performed their hit We Will Rock You with the pop group.

Welsh veteran Tom Jones picked up the Best British Male Solo Artist prize, while Beth Orton won the female equivalent.

Jones told the audience: "I've won a lot of awards in my career but this one tops them all. Thank you."

The ceremony will be shown on ITV on Saturday from 2100 GMT.
