How do UK weather warnings work?

BBC Weather flags up the colour-coded warnings issued by the Met Office to tell people to possible severe weather events.

They can be issued for rain, snow, wind, fog, ice, thunderstorms, lightning and extreme heat.

A matrix system is used to indicate the potential impacts and how likely the expected weather is to actually happen, as Chris Fawkes explains.
