Baltacha went out in the second round at the US Open

With Elena Baltacha on the brink of breaking into the world's top 50 the British number one is preparing to reassess her targets.

The 27-year-old, who lives in Ipswich, is hoping to rise from her current position of 57th when the new rankings are revealed on Monday.

She told BBC Radio Suffolk: "It's been my dream to break the top 100 and now we're talking about the top 50.

"If I do make the top 50 then you change your goals and look at top 40."

The 2010 season has been the most successful of Baltacha's career, seeing her qualify automatically for the Australian and US Opens for the first time, win her maiden $100,000 prize at the Michigan Tennis Classic and attain her highest ever world ranking.

"Personally I didn't think I could do it, I've been trying to make the top 100 for nearly ten years and finally did it at the age 27," she said.

"Everything that I've gone through with injuries, my back surgery, my liver problem, everything will be worth it."

The turning point for the Scot came when she appointed Nino Severino as her coach two years ago.

"We sat down and I said 'I want to retire, I just don't think I've got it anymore'," she said.

"Because Nino kept supporting me and made me understand that I had something there, it was purely because of him that I was kept in the game."

Baltacha will look to wind down her season in November after heading to Asia for a four week stint of tournaments before arriving in Delhi for the Commonwealth Games in October, where she will be seeded.

"Obviously I'm representing Scotland, I grew up there and have a lot of lovely memories," she added.

"It's a much better position to be a seed, it means you're not going to run into any other strong seeds, so you do have a cushion there."
