Hawks send Giants spinning out
Lowly Hunslet caused an upset to knock Huddersfield out of the Powergen Challenge Cup and thwart the Giants' hopes of a world record 30th straight win.
The National League Two side were superior in all departments to the rusty-looking Super League newcomers, who lost for the first time in a year. Fielding six of their close-season recruits, the Giants failed to find any cohesion and were simply ground down by the part-timers. Bryn Powell, Jonlee Lockwood and Dan Briggs all crossed for the Hawks with Jon Liddell adding three goals.
Holders Wigan brushed aside amateurs Halton Simms Cross 82-3 to reach the fifth round of the Powergen Challenge Cup.
But the match was overshadowed by news of the deaths of two members of the Wigan under-21 team, Billy Joe Edwards and Craig Johnson, in a car crash. A minute's silence was held in their honour before the game at the JJB Stadium. When the match began, the Simmies took a shock lead after six minutes with a 30m drop goal from full-back Brian Capewell. But although Capewell added a penalty later in the half, it was not long before the Warriors were in control. Wigan skipper Andy Farrell led the spree, rattling up a total of 30 points from two tries and 11 goals to take the man of the match award.
There were also tries from David Hodgson, Martin Aspinwall, Julian O'Neill, Ricky Bibey, Stephen Wild and Brian Carney. Halifax missed a great chance to cause an upset against Super League rivals Hull, who were 24-16 victors. Hull played most of the second half with 11 men after Jason Smith and Richard Fletcher were both sent off for high tackles. Smith was sensationally sent off just 28 seconds into the tie for a bad tackle on Chris Birchall and Fletcher followed on 48 minutes for a similarly high shot on Andy Hobson. The home side, roared on by 15,310, their biggest crowd for 20 years in their new £43.5m Kingston Communications Stadium, just managed to hold on.
London Broncos eased through with eight tries in their 42-12 victory over Oldham. Rob Jackson and Steve Hall both grabbed a brace for the Broncos although kicker Tony Martin missed several chances to make the win even more emphatic. Widnes cruised into the fifth round of the Challenge Cup with a nine-try 48-6 demolition of Dewsbury at the Halton Stadium. Leeds also ran in nine tries, including two from man-of-the-match Rob Burrow, to overcome Whitehaven 46-6.
