Lowly Hunslet caused an upset to knock Huddersfield out of the Powergen Challenge Cup and thwart the Giants' hopes of a world record 30th straight win.

The National League Two side were superior in all departments to the rusty-looking Super League newcomers, who lost for the first time in a year.

Fielding six of their close-season recruits, the Giants failed to find any cohesion and were simply ground down by the part-timers.

But the match was overshadowed by news of the deaths of two members of the Wigan under-21 team, Billy Joe Edwards and Craig Johnson, in a car crash.

Hull played most of the second half with 11 men after Jason Smith and Richard Fletcher were both sent off for high tackles.

Smith was sensationally sent off just 28 seconds into the tie for a bad tackle on Chris Birchall and Fletcher followed on 48 minutes for a similarly high shot on Andy Hobson.

The home side, roared on by 15,310, their biggest crowd for 20 years in their new £43.5m Kingston Communications Stadium, just managed to hold on.

London Broncos eased through with eight tries in their 42-12 victory over Oldham.
