Bristol Rovers forward Lewis Haldane could make his loan move to Port Vale permanent in January.
The 24-year-old's three-month loan spell at Vale Park ended with a 2-1 win over Lincoln City on Tuesday.
"Talks are ongoing and we're close to agreeing terms with Lewis," manager Micky Adams told BBC Radio Stoke.
"I'm not sure he'll go back to Bristol Rovers. He'll train with us and we'll try and keep him fit for January. Hopefully we'll tie that up this week."
Haldane scored once in 20 appearances for Vale after joining the club on loan in September.
He will receive treatment on a knee injury, which he has been struggling with for a couple of weeks.
"I'm enjoying playing under Micky and I've enjoyed my time here," Haldane said.
"I want to get super fit over the next four weeks and come back raring to go."
