Ferguson is attempting back-to-back promotions with Posh
Peterborough United manager Darren Ferguson has said it is vital that his side have the ability to operate a 'plan B' in certain matches.
Posh have successfully switched to a 4-3-3 formation in recent games with Craig Mackail-Smith wide right.
Ferguson told BBC Radio Cambridgeshire: "We have found a different system to play and I think it suits us.
"Craig ends up playing a bit wider, but he can score goals from there and we'll keep working at it."
Posh claimed a 1-1 draw at Tranmere last night after Ferguson made the switch from 4-4-2 to 4-3-3 with Lee Frecklington coming into the side in place of Chris Whelpdale midway through the first half.
The draw leaves Posh six points behind Milton Keynes Dons in second, but Ferguson was happy to come away with a point.
"We've played four times and nothing has split us so it's not a shock to get another draw," he said.
"In the end it might well be a good point for us, it's a tough place to come and another point towards promotion."
Following a calamitous display at the weekend, all eyes were on Joe Lewis but the Posh keeper repaid the support of his manager with a solid 90 minutes.
"Lewis was magnificent tonight, everyone was waiting for him to make another mistake," Ferguson said.
"He's only 21, a baby really, and a lot more experienced keepers could have gone under so he's shown what he's all about tonight."
