Search goes on for United
Alex Smith was sacked on Monday
United are still looking for Alex Smith's replacement
Falkirk coach Ian McCall's decision to remain at Brockville rather than take up Dundee United's offer of the managerial job is a bitter blow for the Tannadice club.

United chairman Eddie Thompson had publicly stated that McCall was the man he wanted to replace the sacked Alex Smith.

Despite Falkirk's refusal to allow United to speak to McCall, Thompson had been confident of getting his man.

But the new chairman will now have to turn his attentions elsewhere.

United spokesman Malcolm Brown said the club were disappointed not to have been given the chance by Falkirk to conduct proper negotiations with McCall.

"Dundee United will now turn their attentions to all other options and avenues available to the club in their search for a new manager," he added.

"Paul Hegarty and his coaching staff will continue to look after team matters."

Inverness Caley Thistle boss Steve Paterson meets Thompson's criteria for the job, as a young, up-and-coming manager.

Former Rangers manager Walter Smith and ex-Rangers and United defender Richard Gough have also been linked with the vacancy.

But Smith has made it clear he has no interest in returning to Scottish football, while Gough has no managerial experience.

Thompson also has the added problem that, having been so vocal about his preference for McCall to take over, any potential target will know he was not first choice.
