Carlisle boss given board backing

Carlisle United's directors have backed under-fire manager Greg Abbott to continue in his role next season.

Abbott has been facing calls for his dismissal after a disappointing season in which they avoided relegation from League One by a point.

Cumbrians chief executive David Allen said: "We want to bring continuity and stability to the club.

"Now is the time for all of us to work together to put the disappointment of last season behind us."

The decision was taken at a board meeting on Thursday when Abbott put forward his plans for the 2009/10 season.

Seven directors attended the meeting including the club's four owners - Allen, John Nixon, Steven Pattison and Andrew Jenkins - along with Lord Clark of Windermere, Dick Young and Norman Steel.

It was also decided that Dennis Booth and Graham Kavanagh will also continue in their roles as part of the coaching staff.

"We want to bring continuity and stability to the club," Allen said.

"We have had new owners in the last year and three new managers since June 2006. Now is not the time for change.

"Greg is in his first permanent post as a manager and he has a contract to take him through to the end of next season. We will be doing everything we can to help him bring success to Carlisle United in that period."

Abbott was appointed manager at Brunton Park in October of last year following the departure of John Ward.

Despite an early upturn in fortunes, the former Bradford City defender was unable to maintain an upturn in results as the club recorded just one win in their final 12 games of the season.

Abbott, who released six first-teamers earlier this week, will now turn his attention to strengthening his squad although there is set to be few arrivals into Brunton Park this summer.

"If we can add two or three players to the side that finished the game on Saturday... then we've got a very good squad," Abbott told BBC Radio Cumbria.

"Behind that, we're not going to have seven or eight players on massive money. We've got to find some youth that make the budget work.

"I've been given an amount of money to fit in a squad that's going to challenge teams that have got triple our budget. That's not an easy job and If I can find three players then we've got a terrific chance next year."
