Corby Town chairman Peter Mallinger has died after a long battle with leukaemia, at the age of 74.
The former Newcastle United director also served as chairman of Kettering Town from 1990 until 2005, rescuing the club from administration.
Corby Town manager Graham Drury told BBC Radio Northampton: "We had the same dreams and we only achieved a couple.
"He's put Corby on the map. He put his heart and soul into Corby and we have to be so grateful for Peter Mallinger."
Mallinger took charge at Corby in 2007 when he led a consortium that bought control of the club.
The whole town could be named after Peter, because everything he did was for Corby
Graham Drury
He had departed Kettering Town after Imraan Ladak and Paul Gascoigne took control at Rockingham Road.
"He was well loved in football and everyone knew what a genuine man he was," added Drury.
"I think he would say 'don't name the new ground after me'. He would say to get money into the club. That's how he was.
"But the whole town could be named after Peter, because everything he did was for Corby."
Mallinger, who is survived by his wife Barbara and son, David, wrote a book about his experiences in the game, entitled 'So you think you want to be a Director of a Football Club'
Away from football, he founded Newarke Wools Limited in 1961 as a market stall business.
