Former England star Paul Gascoigne could be set for a return to football with non-league side Kettering.

Kettering chairman Peter Mallinger confirmed that he has had an offer for the Conference North side from a consortium involving Gascoigne.

"There's still work to do but we're confident a deal will be completed soon," read a statement from Mallinger and consortium leader Imraan Ladak.

"They have sold us their ideas and I'm sure they'll excite the fans."

Milton Keynes-based businessman Ladak's plan includes taking Kettering full-time.

Ladak has confirmed that manager Kevin Wilson will be staying at the club.

"Following last weekend's visit to Rockingham Road of Imraan and Paul, I have received an offer for my majority shareholding within the club and that of Trevor Bennett," continued Mallinger.

Gascoigne, 38, has been out of the English game since leaving a position as player-coach at Boston United last October.

Ladak's consortium are understood to have previously spoken to three other clubs, including League Two side Peterborough United.

"We are looking forward to the challenge of taking over at Kettering," added Ladak.

"Paul, together with his contacts, will ensure there are exciting times ahead for the supporters. Paul is very excited about the challenge ahead and will play an active role within the club."

Kettering was Ron Atkinson's first job in management, while Derek Dougan and Tommy Lawton also played for the club.
