Abbott wants vacant Welling job

Andy Ford
Ford resigned saying he could take the club no further

Sittingbourne manager Gary Abbott has admitted that he would love to fill the vacant position at Welling United.

Andy Ford resigned as the Wings boss on Monday and Abbott is tipped to leave his Ryman League side to replace him.

"There's a lot of people who are going for it. It's such a big team and it's a big job," said Abbott, Welling's record scorer, with more than 250 goals.

"I'd love to have the Welling job but obviously we'll have to wait and see, he told BBC Radio Kent.

"If I get a call then I'd be happy to go along and see what happens."

Ford walked away after nearly two years at Park View Road because he did not feel he could achieve a play-off place in Blue Square South within the club's tight budget.
