First round defeat for Clayton

Clayton held his own against his more experienced opponent

Jersey's Scott Clayton was bundled out of the first round of qualifying at the Caversham ATP tournament in Jersey.

The 15-year-old lost in straight sets 6-2 6-2 Alexander Slabinsky of England.

Slabinsky is currently ranked 648 in the world but has been as high as 266 back in October 2008.

The 6-2 6-2 score-line flattered Slabinsky as Clayton held his own with the much more experienced player for much of the match.

Clayton told BBC Jersey that taking part was more important than the result.

"It's obviously been a great experience to play a player of this standard, because of that I can hopefully get my game better.

"It was a close match, he played some good stuff at times and I played some good stuff at times but in the end he got the better of me."

Playing in his first senior adult tournament Clayton felt he learnt a lot from the match.

"There's a big difference in pace, so if I can get use to that kind of pace and then play players of my own age group, I think it will benefit my game a lot.

"I think I could have done a few things better, so I'll just work on that and see what happens."

Clayton still has another chance to gain experience when he teams up with Channel Islands performance coach Andy Evans in the men's doubles on Tuesday.
