Seventh seed Svetlana Kuznetsova takes on second seed Serena Williams - the only former champion left in the tournament - in the quarter-final on Court Suzanne Lenglen
Williams struggles to contain a strong start from Kuznetsova and, although she mounts a strong comeback, eventually loses the first set in a tie-break
Serena is in big trouble again at 4-1 and 5-3 down in the second set but finds some big shots when it matters most to level the match
Kuznetsova, the runner-up in 2006, takes a tumble on the clay as she is broken again at the start of the deciding set and she is suddenly facing defeat
But Serena seems to run out of steam as she closes in on victory and it is the Russian who emerges to reach the last four with a 7-6 (7-3) 5-7 7-5 victory
Over on Court Philippe Chatrier, Australian 30th seed Samantha Stosur faces unseeded Romanian Sorana Cirstea for the right to face Kuznetsova
The 19-year-old Cirstea beat Jelena Jankovic in the fourth round but quickly finds herself in trouble against Stosur, who is better known for her doubles prowess, and drops the first set 6-1
From there, Stosur does not look back, racing through the second set to complete a 6-1 6-3 victory and become the first Australian woman in the last four since Nicole Provis in 1988
French favourite Gael Monfils is at his big-hitting best as he gets his quarter-final against second seed Roger Federer under way
Federer has to save a set-point before winning a tense first-set tie-break but soon takes the match by the scruff of the neck
Monfils, the 11th seed, attempts to wrestle back the initiative but he is quickly behind again in the second set and Federer looks in command
Monfils fades badly and Federer, who has lost the last three finals in Paris to Rafael Nadal, makes short work of the third set to win 7-6 (8-6) 6-2 6-4
Federer eases through to move closer to his first French Open title and he has now reached the semi-finals, at least, of his last 20 Grand Slam tournaments
Fifth seed Juan Martin del Potro has looked impressive at Roland Garros so far this year and he maintains that form as he takes the first set 6-3 against Tommy Robredo
Robredo has been in the quarter-finals in Paris twice before without going further and his task of making the last four this time is not helped when he loses the second set 6-4
Del Potro had only won one match at Roland Garros before this year but he has announced himself a real contender to inherit Rafael Nadal's crown thanks to his big forehand and powerful serve
He only drops two more games in the third set as he wraps up a one-sided victory and is overjoyed after booking his place in his first Grand Slam semi-final
