Robin Soderling, who shocked champion Rafael Nadal in the fourth round, takes on 10th seed Nikolay Davydenko in the French Open quarter-finals
Davydenko is a two-time semi-finalist at Roland Garros but he cannot live with Soderling in the first two sets, which the Swede takes 6-1 6-3
Soderling, the 32nd seed, has never been beyond the third round in Paris before but he drops only one more game on his way to a one-sided win that puts him into his first Grand Slam semi-final
Top women's seed Dinara Safina has lost only five games on her way to the quarter-finals but she gets a taste of her own medicine from Victoria Azarenka, who takes the first set 6-1
Azarenka, the ninth seed from Belarus, continues her aggressive approach in the second set but Safina raises her game when it matters to take it 6-4
And while Azarenka becomes more and more frustrated with the errors creeping into her game, the big-hitting Russian keeps her composure to take the decider 6-2 and reach the last four
Former world number one Maria Sharapova, now ranked 102 after nine months out injured, takes on Dominika Cibulkova for the right to play Safina
Cibulkova, the 20th seed from Slovakia, is playing in her first Grand Slam quarter-final but races through the first set without losing a game
Sharapova is quickly 5-0 down in the second set too and, although she picks up two games before being beaten, soon suffers her worst ever defeat in a Grand Slam
British number one Andy Murray is next out on Court Philippe Chatrier, playing Fernando Gonzalez with a semi-final against Robin Soderling awaiting the winner
Gonzalez, seeded 12th, is well known for his fearsome forehand and he uses it to good effect early on to take the first set 6-3
Murray, who has never won a title on clay, hits back in determined style and does not make a single unforced error as he wins the second set by the same scoreline
The third set is a completely different story, however, and Murray's form deserts him completely - he wins just seven points as Gonzalez takes it without dropping a game
Murray does improve in the fourth set but Gonzalez continues to produce some inspired tennis and eventually wraps up a 6-3 3-6 6-0 6-4 win in two hours and 15 minutes
Gonzalez goes on to the last four but Murray's dreams of securing his first Grand Slam title in Paris are over - although he did go further at Roland Garros than ever before
