A MURRAY GB bt I PASTOR Spa
6-2 6-4
GAME-BY-GAME UPDATES:
Second set:
Murray 6-2 6-4 Navarro Pastor
And that's it, it's all over. Yet another superb passing shot down the line earns Murray match point, only for Navarro to save it courtesy of a net cord. The Spaniard earns himself a game point but a fired-up Murray responds to his own barrage of abuse with two consecutive points and he seals it with a looped cross-court winner.
Despite suggestions that your correspondent had fallen asleep, an entertaining encounter sees Murray emerge victorious and looking in superb form. Brad Gilbert's broad smile at the close says it all.
Murray 6-2 5-4 Navarro Pastor
It was important that Murray continued to match Navarro's tenacity and he does so but, again, not without a scare. It takes two sublime cut-off volleys to earn him another service hold and Navarro will serve to stay in the match.
Murray 6-2 4-4 Navarro Pastor
You have to admire Navarro, who is far from disgracing himself here. He's having to pick returns off his toes and beat away some ferocious ground strokes, but he is holding his own in this set - even if his first challenge of the set is an incorrect one. He holds to 30 with another super volley and it's all-square again.
Murray 6-2 4-3 Navarro Pastor
Perhaps Murray was conserving his energy in preparation for another fine display of his renewed service action - and it does look good. Still, it's his ground-strokes and mobility that have taken him into the world's top 20, and it is these which earn him the game to 30 to keep his nose in front.
Murray 6-2 3-3 Navarro Pastor
Navarro: short, pit-bullish in appearance - in the nicest possible way - and full of heart. Murray appears to be conserving his energy as the Spaniard holds to 15 and not even a late shout at the line judge from the 19-year-old can prevent him being pinned back to 3-3.
Murray 6-2 3-2 Navarro Pastor
The local schoolchildren are in at the Madrid Arena and Murray's third comfortable service game of the set is greeted with high-pitched shrills and a smattering of polite applause. It deserved more, despite a double fault, but the match is hardly a contest to get the pulse racing at the moment to be fair.
Murray 6-2 2-2 Navarro Pastor
Apparently 'Saw 3' is next on Murray's hit-list of films to see - and the title is reminiscent of what the Briton is doing to Navarro's serve-volley game at the moment. However, he can't yet gain the elusive break in this set after Navarro twice beats away ferocious returns from the Scot as he holds to 30.
Murray 6-2 2-1 Navarro Pastor
Perhaps conscious that the match is coming to a rather swift conclusion, the players decide to have a little knock-up mid-point to draw out the affair. After a series of forehand returns from both players, the rally is only ended by an incorrect line call. The replayed point sees another Murray challenge on an out call bear fruit - he loves this new rule - and he goes on to hold to love.
Murray 6-2 1-1 Navarro Pastor
A sensational forehand return from outside the court brings Murray a deserved break point, but Navarro responds with a bludgeoned backhand winner before sealing the game thanks to a rare error from the Scot. Still, he is being made to work too hard on his serve here.
Murray 6-2 1-0 Navarro Pastor
It's showboat time for Murray. Unreturnable serves, a super back-court winner down the line and then a delightful drop-shot earn him the first game to love. Navarro has a mountain to climb here.
First set:
Murray 6-2 Navarro Pastor
Murray has described his hotel in Madrid as "the weirdest I've ever stayed in". Well he may be returning there even sooner than expected on this form. He secures his second break of serve with a delightful lob - a point after a successful 'challenge' brings a British couple in the crowd to a frenzy - and Navarro will have to dig deep to battle back here.
Murray 5-2 Navarro Pastor
Despite a smooth-looking action on his serve, and the fact that Murray is getting a higher percentage of first serves in than normal, the 19-year-old faces his first break point at 30-40. The youngster is made of stern stuff these days though and, much to the delight of air-punching coach Brad Gilbert, he wins the next three points to move him to within a game of the first set.
Murray 4-2 Navarro Pastor
Navarro still looks vulnerable on his serve when Murray gets his returns right - which the Scot is doing with increasing regularity. The Spaniard perseveres with the serve-volley tactic though, which only serves to encourage Murray. Five times the home favourite goes to advantage, five times he is dragged back, until he finally sees out the game to keep the first set alive.
Murray 4-1 Navarro Pastor
The Spaniard is not without fight though and, cheered on by literally dozens of partisan fans, he takes it to 15-30. Murray responds with a challenge on the out call on his first serve - but the call was good. No matter, he goes on to win the point on his second serve and sees out the game with a brilliant volley after another entertaining rally.
Murray 3-1 Navarro Pastor
Navarro Pastor, who came in on the back of some fine first serves in his opening service game, continues to serve-volley - even on his second serve. It's not long before Murray starts to find his range though and two fine returns, a beautiful lob and then a crashed winner seal the Scot a first break of serve to 30.
Murray 2-1 Navarro Pastor
Murray, with his renewed serve action looking impressive, has little trouble in restoring his lead, sealing the game with his second ace.
Murray 1-1 Navarro Pastor
Pastor refuses to be overawed, firing two aces on his first two serves, before Murray displays his court speed with a brilliant fetch to pull it back to 30-15. However, another ace and then a serve-and-volley sees the Spaniard level it up.
Murray 1-0 Navarro Pastor
Murray, who lost in his first match in his last two tournaments in Bangkok and Tokyo, shows no sign of nerves as he eases through the first game to 15, including a first ace on point one.
Pre-match (all times BST):
1128: FYI: Hawkeye and the 'challenge' system is making its debut in Madrid this week. Same rules apply - two challenges each per set, with an extra challenge in the tie-break, and a player loses a challenge if he gets a disputed call wrong.
1124: Qualifier Pastor, the 16th-highest ranked Spaniard, is number 129 in the world - 110 places behind Britain's number one.
That need not mean it will be a walkover for Murray though, with Alicante-born Pastor, 24, having enjoyed a fair amount of success on the Challenger circuit - including recent wins in Bratislava and Seville. Those wins both came on clay though and facing Murray on a fast indoor court at altitude might well prove a different prospect.
1119: The players stroll onto the court, described as "strange looking" due to its green-ish appearance by Murray on his personal website, with the 19-year-old Scot thankfully looking wide awake, despite his notorious dislike of morning starts.
Following Paradorn Srichaphan's swift 6-2 6-2 victory over Gorka Fraile, the sparse crowd will be hoping for a more competitive match. Having said that, with only a handful of people in their seats, at least the lunch queue will be short if it's not.
