Ashton made the England rugby league squad before switching codes

Northampton wing Chris Ashton says his call-up to the England squad ahead of last Saturday's clash with Argentina has given his confidence a boost. The 22-year-old, who made the English rugby league squad before switching codes, scored a try in the Saints' 19-3 LV= Cup win over Saracens on Saturday. "I went down with an open mind and really relished being there," Ashton told BBC Radio Northampton. "It's great to score tries and great to get noticed," he added. Ashton joined his club colleagues Shane Geraghty, Courtney Lawes, Dylan Hartley and Ben Foden for training although he did not make the match-day squad and was released back to Saints. "There were five of us down there - and we looked like a big gang!" "It was a complete shock when I got the call. In fact my dad thought I was taking the mickey." "But it was good to have a chance to get to know everybody." Ashton moved to Franklin's Gardens from Wigan Warriors in 2007 and has scored six tries in nine league and cup games for Northampton this season.
