Allen was one of five players released by Gloucester in May

Leicester Tigers' new centre Anthony Allen says he cannot wait for the start of the new season at Welford Road. The 22-year-old was released by Gloucester in May and signed for their Premiership rivals last week. "Gloucester have taken me a long way and I'm really proud of what happened there," Allen told BBC Radio Leicester. "But it's a new start and a new challenge for me, and there's lots of competition here. I think fighting for that Tigers shirt is going to be key." Allen was immediately impressed by the set-up and the facilities at Welford Road, and is relishing the chance to get involved in such a prestigious side.

"The quality they have in the team and the professional aspect they have as a club, it's a massive drive [for me]," he added. Inevitably, Allen will come up against his old club over the course of the Premiership season, and he admitted that returning to Kingsholm in particular will be a nervous date in his diary. "It's going to be a daunting day going back there," he said. "I've spoken to a few players and they said it's always a bit weird going back there, but I'm looking forward to it and it should be an exciting day."
