Sarcens took Newcastle apart in the second half

Saracens comprehensively outplayed Newcastle as they recorded a crushing home victory at Vicarage Road.

Glen Jackson's accurate boot gave Saracens a 15-0 lead at half-time and the home side ran riot after the break.

Kameli Ratuvou, Kevin Sorrell, Hugh Vyvyan, Rodd Penney and Gordon Ross all scored as they took advantage of the Falcons having two men in the sin-bin.

Newcastle finally got on the scoreboard with two tries in the last five minutes but the match was over as a contest.

Saracens were looking to break their duck after defeats in their opening two Guinness Premiership fixtures, and they did so in style with a try bonus point for good measure.

But Newcastle will have to go back to the drawing board after falling foul of referee Dean Richards time after time at the breakdown.

The Falcons' indiscipline allowed Jackson to kick three penalties inside the opening 21 minutes and a drop-goal from 30m out was followed by a fourth penalty just before half-time.

The 15-0 lead did not flatter Saracens, with their pack well on top of their opponents', and they started to pull further clear in the second half.

A brilliant last-ditch tackle in the 44th minute by Jonny Wilkinson stopped Ratuvou after a 70m to the line, but it was only a temporary reprieve for the Falcons as the winger charged down a Tom May kick a minute later before diving over for the first try.

The Fijian chipped over Spencer Davey, collected and drew May and Wilkinson before passing inside to leave Sorrell a run to the line.

The referee finally lost patience with Newcastle's infringements at the ruck after 58 minutes, sending Phil Dowson to the sin-bin for killing the ball.

And a minute later Ed Williamson followed his captain to the sidelines for an identical offence, and Vyvyan quickly punished them by crashing over.

A fourth try, which brings a bonus point, came in the 66th minute when scrum-half Neil de Kock broke from inside his own 22 and made huge amounts of ground before handing Penney his try on a plate.

Replacement fly-half Ross scored a fifth try soon after coming on as Saracens threatened to bring up a half century of points.

Newcastle saved some face with Wilkinson's try as the clock ticked down, and May added a second at the death but they were mere consolation scores.

Wilkinson is finding solace in quantum physics and Buddhism these days, and it is just as well with Newcastle still seaching for their first away win of 2008.

Saracens director of rugby Eddie Jones:

"There's a lot of timidity at the moment. The good thing was we played with a lot of conviction.

"We want to be a side that can play at the highest level and to do that you have to be robust in certain areas.

"One's the set piece and the other is defence. We can give ourselves a pass mark in both for 70 minutes.

"We had some control today and, with the way the game's being played at the moment and the interpretation of the laws, you need that control.

"You've then got to be good enough to take advantage of your opportunities and we did that."

Newcastle Falcons head coach Steve Bates:

"I was disappointed with the set piece in the first half and the second half was a mess.

"We had two men sent to the sin-bin and that meant we were always going to be under pressure."
