Uttoxeter Racecourse staged the Midlands Grand National in March

Uttoxeter general manager David MacDonald is expecting a wide open race when the English Summer National is staged on Sunday. The race will be run over three-and-a-half miles, having been held over a longer distance in previous years. "A lot of the winners have run nicely on the outside and kept out of bother," MacDonald told BBC Radio Stoke. "It's wide open and far more competitive than it would have been when it was a four-mile race." The 46 initial entries will be whittled down to a starting list of 18 on Thursday morning. Former winner Take The Stand could take part, along with Sea Wall, the beaten favourite from 2009. The race is one of the most important in the National Hunt season and carries a first prize of £50,000. MacDonald added: "The course looks in fantastic condition and it gets you in the mood for great summer racing."
