Smart admits to luck in tour win

Local mountain biker Rob Smart says winning the 2009 Tour of Guernsey is the culmination of almost a decade of hard work and a bit of luck.

Smart won overall victory in the week-long series, just pipping Michael Serafin, who had to pull out of a race.

"I'm just relieved to finally win the tour, I've been trying for eight or nine years now since I started cycling," said the 31-year-old.

"Luck was on my side and I did not have any problems throughout the week."

Smart added: "Quite a few guys had punctures this week and one of those can lose you quite a few places on the night which effects your overall position."

"It is dependent on luck but obviously there is quite a bit involved in making sure you are quick enough to be up there when it counts."
