Chatham golfer Matt Haines admits he been pleasantly surprised by the success he has enjoyed in his first outings on the European Tour. The 20-year-old was second in only his second tournament, the Saint Omer Open in France, finishing two shots behind the winner, Austria's Martin Wiegele. Haines said: "I didn't expect the results to come so early. I didn't set any goals, I just want to enjoy it." The result in France lifted Haines to fifth in the Challenge Tour rankings. "It's just great to be able to play with all the other guys on the Tour, I can't wait for the next tournament to come now," added Haines. The former Walker Cup player has only been a professional for a month, and played just four tournaments as a pro. Haines won just over 36,000 Euros [£30,000] for his efforts in Saint Omer, and is still deciding what to do with the money. "A car would be nice, but I should probably get a driving licence first," he said. "I'd like to help out my parents and everyone that's helped me so far, I'm looking forward to repaying everyone."
