Stockport County's administrators have agreed a deal to sell the club to a consortium fronted by former Leicester and Manchester City player Jim Melrose.
The consortium will now begin discussions with rugby union club Sale Sharks, who are the League One outfit's Edgeley Park landlords.
Stockport went into administration in April because of their level of debt.
Manager Jim Gannon was later made redundant as part of a series of cost-cutting measures.
A spokesperson for the Melrose consortium said: "We look forward to developing a fruitful relationship with Sale Sharks and Stockport Metropolitan Borough Council, which will provide the basis for a successful future for Stockport County."
