Hughes made 46 appearances for the Cobblers last season
Northampton Town coach Ian Sampson has said he believes defender Mark Hughes should sign the new contract being offered by the club.
Hughes was offered a new deal at the start of May, but is yet to make a decision on his future at Sixfields.
Sampson told BBC Radio Northampton: "If I was in that position, I would want to sign and secure my future. I think he's playing a bit of a dangerous game.
"If he really wants to stay with Northampton, he'll sign the contract."
Only four Cobblers players were offered new deals at the end of the season, Chris Dunn and Giles Coke have committed themselves to the club while Jason Crowe has signed for Leeds United.
Sampson said: "Giles has shown he is committed to the club and we hope he can fulfil his potential in the coming season.
"He had a difficult time last year with injuries and lack of form. He's got something to prove to everyone at the club and hopefully he can do that."
