Leicester City boss Ian Holloway took consolation from the performances of new boys Barry Hayles and Steve Howard after the New Year's Day defeat at QPR.
"Barry Hayles couldn't have worked any harder, he chased everything down," Holloway told BBC Radio Leicester.
"And Steven Howard was immense when he came on. He made a big difference in the second half.
"But they're not going to change things on their own - you're only as good as your weakest link."
Holloway said it is vital his younger players learn from the likes of Hayles and Howard who both joined in time to make their debuts on Tuesday.
"It's all about youth and enthusiasm and legs and running," Holloway said.
"But I've got a bunch who need some stability, they need some characters who are strong, who don't shirk things and keep going until the end."
However Holloway was less impressed with his side's defensive display.
"Goals change games and they got them at the right time and ours came too late," the former QPR boss said.
"Chance for chance I didn't see too much difference.
"But the most annoying thing for me was I saw some very positive strides when the ball was put in the air by some of their people who were attacking it and I didn't see my defenders doing the same thing.
"The second goal was particularly awful because somebody volleyed it in five or six yards out giving my keeper no chance but he was the only one running in taking a gamble on their guy winning the header."
