Histon player-boss David Livermore wants to turn Omer Riza's non-contract deal into a permanent arrangement.
The striker, 30, was registered with the Stutes just before their 3-0 defeat by Kettering on Saturday, 28 August.
Livermore told BBC Radio Cambridgeshire: "I'd like to sign Omer permanently if we can.
"That's something we're trying to sort out at the moment, but other than that there's not a great deal of money left in the pot."
He added: "We still have the possibility to utilise another loan deal, but we'd have to be clever with that one.
"There's still one or two players I want to assess and once we've done that we might have a good understanding of what we might need."
The Stutes manager will also try and extend Femi Ilesanmi's loan deal.
The defender is set to return to parent club Dagenham & Redbridge on 11 September.
"He is one we want to keep, I think he is vital for us this season," added Livermore.
"He's been outstanding in the last two games and he's one we need to talk to."
