Crewe Alexandra manager Gudjon Thordarson is expected to gain approval from the board of directors to bring in his own number two.
The Icelander was appointed last January and has continued to work alongside the existing staff.
Thordarson told BBC Radio Stoke: "It's important that I have someone I can recognise and I know."
He has ruled out bringing in Ross McLaren, who worked with him when he was in charge at Notts County.

Current assistant manager Neil Baker has been at the Alex for the last 15 years and has been a loyal servant to Dario Gradi and Steve Holland.
Baker could be asked to take another role within the club if the backroom team reshuffle goes ahead.
