Wroxham outclassed by rampant Whitley Bay at Wembley

FA Vase holders Whitley Bay scored six goals at Wembley to smash Wroxham and retain the trophy.

A crowd of 8,920 saw Paul Chow head home the opening goal after just 23 seconds, only for Paul Cook to draw Wroxham level on 12 minutes.

An Andy Eastaugh own-goal on 16 minutes saw Whitley lead at half-time.

Lee Kerr extended the lead just after the half-time break, with Adam Johnston, Paul Robinson and Josh Gillies rounding off the rout.

Whitley Bay boss Ian Chandler told BBC Newcastle after the match: "I'm almost in tears, it was a perfect ending to a perfect game.

"The lads were on fire, they were buzzing all week, every single one of them wanted to prove a point.

"We had a free for all at the end of the match, Wroxham were trying to get in the game and we just picked them off and scored six goals."

BBC Radio Norfolk commentator Paul Warne, a Vase winner with Diss Town in 1994, said the scoreline should not detract from Wroxham's achievement.

At the moment it's just pure disappointment because we didn't come here to get second place

Wroxham captain Graham Challen

"To get here was one thing, to beat Whitley Bay would have taken a massive task. Wroxham approached this as best they could, unfortunately Whitley Bay are just one strong team," he said.

"You can prepare and you can try as hard as you like but sometimes class just comes to the top and today that's been the case.

"You have to go toe to toe and make them start to doubt themselves, unfortunately them scoring a goal that early made them puff their chests out even more."

Wroxham goalkeeper Scott Howie said there was no shame in losing to the holders.

"It was really tough, Whitley Bay are a very good team, probably one of the best teams we've played in this competition.

"I'm not sure the score reflected the performance we put in but that's life in football and they're worthy winners," he said.

Wroxham captain Graham Challen could find little solace in their performance after the final whistle.

Bay were worthy winners - Howie

"At the moment it's just pure disappointment because we didn't come here to get second place.

"We were well beaten in the end because we tried to push for goals and I don't think they were that much better than us but we had to try something and they were a good team," he added.
