Maidstone United have moved quickly to appoint Peter Nott as manager for the rest of the season.
Nott and his assistant Tony Cornwell have been running the reserve side for the past nine years and will pick the team for Tuesday's game with Hendon.
Senior player Jay Saunders is considering the offer of the role of player-coach.
Lloyd Hume and Alan Walker resigned on Monday after after five years in charge.
Nott and Cornwell said in a joint statement: "There was certainly a little bit of a tingle in both our stomachs when the chairman offered us the post, as it is something we had always hoped we would be offered one day."
The club will review the situation at the end of the season with a view to offering the pair a two year agreement.
Chairman Paul Bowden-Brown said: "I have to admit the last 48 hours have been very traumatic for me, having to say goodbye to Alan and Lloyd and then ask two loyal servants of the club to steady the ship, drive it forward and make sure we are playing Ryman Premier Division football again next season."
Hume and Walker stepped down announcing they felt they had taken the club as far as they could.
They took the Stones to consecutive championships, winning the Kent League in 2005 and Ryman South a year later.
Hume told BBC Radio Kent: "My time at the club has been fantastic and I'm sad to be going, but I just feel the time is right for the club and for me."
Chairman Paul Bowden-Brown told the club website: "It was with great regret that I have had to accept their resignations. I would like to place on record my sincere thanks to both of them for the wonderful job they have done over the years."
United are without a win in four league games and sit in 15th in the Ryman Premier Division, just three points above the relegation zone.
