COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP DIVISION TWO, Northampton: CLOSE OF PLAY, DAY TWO: Rain. Northants 23-1. Derbyshire yet to bat. 7-10 July 2009 (Play starts 1100 BST)
Just eight overs were possible in the day as rain had the final word on the first day of Northants' home meeting with Derbyshire at Wantage Road. After winning the toss and putting the home side in, Nantie Hayward made an early breakthrough, tempting Ben Howgego to edge to second slip. Stephen Peters and Rob White then remained unparted on 23-1 before the weather intervened in mid-morning. Just eight overs were bowled before one heavy storm ended it for the day. And play in the County Championship Division Two game was finally called off shortly before the scheduled tea interval. Howgego, 21, survived just six balls on his home Championship debut. But, after sending down just three overs, Hayward had to withdraw from the field through injury. South Africa's former Worcestershire and Middlesex paceman, 32, playing just his second first-class game for the county after last week's debut against Leicestershire, suffered a twisted ankle. And, after losing leading wicket taker Graham Wagg on Monday, also with an ankle injury, Derbyshire will be sweating on Hayward's fitness as they bid to maintain their unbeaten start to the season.
