Worcs batsmen play out Yorks draw

COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP DIVISION ONE, New Road:

CLOSE OF PLAY, FINAL DAY: Match Drawn. Worcestershire 415 and 203-3 dec, Yorkshire 516 (Worcs 11pts, Yorks 12pts)

Worcestershire v Yorkshire

Worcestershire's batsmen saved their side from potential embarrassment as they drew with Yorkshire at New Road.

Visiting ninth-wicket pair Azeem Rafiq and Matthew Hoggard fuelled hopes of an away win in taking their overnight stand to 150 as the Tykes ended on 516.

That earned a 101-run first innings lead, but Worcestershire comfortably avoided defeat in this battle of Division One's bottom two.

Opener Stephen Moore (52) led the way as Worcester shook hands on 203-3.

That was the previously out-of-form Moore's second half century of the match, in which he has more than doubled his tally of Championship runs for the season.

Skipper Vikram Solanki weighed in with 48, while Ben Smith returned to form with an unbeaten 48 and opener Daryl Mitchell made 32.

Steve Rhodes had started their second innings staring at the possibility of a fifth defeat in six Championship games this season.

Instead, it leaves Worcestershire, Yorkshire and Warwickshire as the only top flight counties still without a Championship win in 2009.

Worcestershire director of cricket Steve Rhodes told BBC Hereford and Worcester:

"All that rain that we had on day two took quite a lot of time out of the game and made it very difficult.

"It was a good wicket, probably just a bit more in favour of the batters than bowlers.

"But unfortunately it was not a result wicket in the end."
