Women needed to bolster Channel Islands Athletics squad

Athletics

The Channel Islands Athletics team manager Andrew Winnie has expressed frustration at the lack of depth in the current women's squad.

The team are currently close to being relegated from Division Three of the UK Women's Athletics League.

Last weekend Channel Islands women came seventh out of eight teams in Kingston.

Winnie told BBC Guernsey: "We only had eight athletes and 36 events, so we're banging our heads against a brick wall unless we have some more athletes."

He added: "With three events per athlete it only gives us 24 events that we're allowed to contest.

"We need some more people to come along and just take part, because taking part gives you two points and we were only one point behind the team in front last weekend."

The Channel Islands women's squad currently has several top-class athletes, including 3,000m runner Louise Perrio, who won both her events in Kingston.

Winnie said: "We've got the superstars, so we just need the ordinary, everyday athlete that comes along and is prepared to put in a performance that will warrant a few points.

"I'm actively seeking people who still do athletics, maybe not seriously, but I'm trying to get them to come out and see how they get on and then we can take it from there."
