Venables on Leeds list
Former England coach Terry Venables
Venables has been working as a television pundit
Terry Venables is one of the contenders to replace David O'Leary as manager of Leeds United.

The former England and Barcelona coach's most recent Premiership experience was with Middlesbrough, who he led away from the relegation zone two seasons ago.

I've been pleasantly surprised by the interest expressed by some quality managers
Leeds chairman Peter Ridsdale

"I have always been an admirer of Terry Venables as a coach and he is on my list," said Leeds chairman Peter Ridsdale.

Venables is currently working as an ITV pundit and has been on duty during the World Cup in Japan and South Korea.

Ridsdale added that money would be no object in securing a new manager.

"We will not fail to get our choice for manager through any lack of ability to finance the deal," he told the News Of The World newspaper.

Venables' name is on a Leeds' short-list, which is believed to be contain six names.

Martin O'Neill and Mick McCarthy have also emerged as favourites to fill the void left by O'Leary, with Derby boss John Gregory another name to be linked with the post.

Outgoing South Korea coach Guus Hiddink has also entered the frame, but Middlesbrough have dismissed suggestions that Steve McClaren is in the running for the Elland Road hot-seat.

I've been pleasantly surprised by the interest expressed by some quality managers
Leeds chairman Peter Ridsdale

"The board will convene on Sunday to discuss all the names available to us and hopefully we can draw up a short-list of three definite targets," said Ridsdale.

"We have to do this sensibly and constructively, but what I am certain of is that we must appoint a manager who can build on the club's recent success and take us to that next level.

"We need to find a manager who we believe will lead the team to some silverware and more Champions League football.

"I haven't approached anybody. At the moment we have a short-list which has been added to because a number of people have let it be known they would like to be considered.

"I've been pleasantly surprised by the interest expressed by some quality managers."

However, O'Leary poured cold water on reports of a short-list, claiming a new man had already been lined up to replace him.

Celtic boss O'Neill is sure to be high on Ridsdale's wish-list as he was a top target for Leeds four years ago when they were looking for someone to replace George Graham.

The former Northern Ireland midfielder stayed at Leicester, but he could be swayed on this occasion amid reports that his family have not settled in Scotland.

Martin O'Neill
Will Martin O'Neill wave goodbye to Celtic?

O'Neill's stock is sky-high at Celtic after guiding them to back-to-back Scottish titles and he has 12 months left to run on a three-year contract.

But if O'Neill decides he can work within the current financial constraints at Leeds, he may feel they are better placed to mount a European challenge in the future.

Barnsley-born McCarthy enhanced his reputation by taking the Republic of Ireland to the last 16 of the World Cup and his Yorkshire roots would make him a popular choice.

BBC Sport Online profiles some of the other possible candidates.

Guus Hiddink: The Dutchman is looking for another job after taking South Korea to the semi-finals, but has also been linked with a return to PSV Eindhoven.

Gordon Strachan: The former Leeds midfielder would be popular with fans but Ridsdale may feel he lacks experience at the top level.

Alan Curbishley: The Charlton manager thrives on a limited budget and has made it clear he would like to manage at a higher level one day.

George Burley: The Scot impressed by taking Ipswich into the Premiership and winning a Uefa Cup place and could be given a quick return to the top level.
