Australia closing on Test victory
First Npower Test, Lord's, day three (stumps)
England 155 & 156-5 v Australia 190 & 384

Warne took three wickets after tea

Shane Warne took three wickets after tea on day three as Australia set their sights on victory in the first Test.

When bad light ended the day, England were 156-5, needing a record 420 to win at Lord's, with Kevin Pietersen 42 not out and Geraint Jones unbeaten on six.

All five wickets fell in 13 overs after Marcus Trescothick (44) and Andrew Strauss (37) shared a stand of 80.

England had dropped three catches as Australia posted 384, Simon Katich (67) adding 95 for the last two wickets.

The hosts took strike in mid-afternoon facing a target two runs higher than the highest successful chase ever, by West Indies against Australia in Antigua in 2003.

Trescothick and Strauss survived some testing pace bowling from Australia's opening duo of Lee, who regularly took the speed gun well over 90mph, and Glenn McGrath.

But Warne joined the attack in the 20th over and soon found extravagant, unsettling turn.

Trescothick was lucky to survive to the tea break, after Warne had a strong appeal turned down in his second over, umpire Aleem Dar incorrectly thinking there had been an inside edge.

From there, Trescothick never looked comfortable before edging a straighter delivery to slip.

Neither Ian Bell not Andrew Flintoff were allowed to find their feet, or reach double figures, before falling to similar deliveries, Bell lbw and Flintoff caught behind.

Lee profited from the increasing disquiet, and pulled off a spectacular diving catch at the end of his follow-through to dismiss Strauss as he pulled out of a hook.

And Michael Vaughan looked all at sea as he played inside a straight delivery and lost his off stump.

Pietersen provided late entertainment, though, with boundaries off both Lee and Warne, including a massive hook off Lee into the Warner Stand at deep midwicket.

Rain was getting heavier as the umpires took the players off at 1735 BST but even with further poor weather forecast for Sunday there is only a slim possibility that England could survive.

Lee is run out
Lee's dive could not beat a classy throw from Giles

England started the day knowing they needed to limit the damage, and they got the early wicket they wanted.

Lee was run out by a lightning throw from Ashley Giles at gully to leave Australia 289-8.

But some undisciplined bowling and poor fielding allowed the tourists to race from a position of advantage to one of utter dominance.

Flintoff in particular struggled bowling up the hill from the Nursery End, Katich taking three successive boundaries in one over as the Lancashireman erred outside off stump.

Gillespie was dropped on nine, Geraint Jones failing to collect a diving one-handed attempted catch.

The frustrated bowler, Simon Jones, benefited from one that kept low to tempt the number 10 batsman into an edge behind.

Last man McGrath proved that his batting is much improved by equalling his best against England with three stylish boundaries.

But he was put down twice, by Flintoff at second slip on 14 and again on 20 when wicket-keeper Jones dived but failed to gather a ball that flew high off the glove.
