Florence and Hounslow took Bronze in the C2 class

British duo David Florence and Rachel Cawthorn claimed unprecedented successes in separate canoe and kayak events on Sunday. Florence won bronze in the C1 (canoe single) class and bronze in the C2 (canoe double) with Richard Hounslow at the World Cup event in Pau, France. He became the first Briton to win two slalom medals at a major event. Meanwhile, Cawthorn won her second bronze medal at the European Sprint Championships in the 500m in Germany. It is the first time Great Britain have won a medal in the discipline. "That was such a surprise, I just can't believe it. I went a bit harder off the start, followed my race plan and it went perfectly," said Cawthorn. On Friday, the 20-year-old kayaker was part of the GB women's K4 crew that claimed bronze in the 200m.

Florence, who is originally from Edinburgh but now lives and trains in Nottingham, was delighted to make British Slalom history. "It feels very special to win two medals at a world cup. It is the first time in history that anyone has won two medals in slalom," he said. "It is also the first time that I have won a medal in the C2 class and this is only the second time I have competed at this level in the C2. So it's fantastic." Florence and C2 partner Hounslow's result should provide them with confidence going into the second World Cup race next weekend in Bratislava and the final one in Augsburg. The pair should also race at the World Championships in Seu D'Urgell in September.
