West Ham boss Julen Lopetegui speaking to Sky Sports on whether the third goal was especially frustrating to concede: “Yes frustration for us, we started the match well. It was not a chance, it was a gift for our side and of course they don’t forgive this kind of gift. It's very difficult to play against this kind of team, when you concede these goals it is more difficult. After this we showed character, personality, it's true.

“Second half we did a good performance, had the ball, were calm, we damaged them, had chances but didn't score and then in one moment they closed the match and don't allow us to be close to the draw. Despite in my opinion in the second half, we deserve.

“We have to keep going, working a lot with good things we did, to overcome things we have to improve for sure. Today we competed against one of the best teams in the world and we were very very close to getting a positive thing. To work hard to overcome and do better and better in the future.”

On goalkeeper Alphonse Areola who was brought off at half-time: “He had one problem in the half with his back. That’s why we changed.”

Erling Haaland continued his superb start to the season by hitting back-to-back hat-tricks as defending champions Manchester City beat West Ham United at London Stadium.

The Norway striker struck twice in the first half and added a third late on to take his tally to seven goals in three games and maintain City's 100% start to the campaign.

Haaland slid in a 10th-minute opener after receiving a pass from Bernardo Silva, but West Ham drew level when Ruben Dias turned Jarrod Bowen's cross into his own net.

Haaland restored City's lead midway through the first half, driving a fierce strike into the roof of the net.

The Hammers had struggled to get a foothold in the game but hit the woodwork early in the second half through Mohammed Kudus following a quick break.

That chance sparked them into life and for a significant period they had their opponents on the back foot.

But they did not threaten Ederson enough and Haaland - quiet for much of the second half - beat the offside trap late on to get his and City's third.

The win means Pep Guardiola's side are already top of the table in the early stages of this season while West Ham are 14th with three points from three games.

Wolves were another side to pick up their first point of the campaign, drawing 1-1 at Nottingham Forest.

Aston Villa won away at Leicester City in a Midlands derby.

Ipswich Town earned their first top-flight point since 2002 with a 1-1 draw against Fulham at Portman Road.

The best match of the day was at Goodison Park as Bournemouth scored three late goals to fight back from 2-0 down and beat Everton.

Brentford sold England striker Ivan Toney to Saudi Arabia side Al-Alhi yesterday for £40m, with Toney watching on from the stands today as his old team were too good for Southampton.

Arsenal drew 1-1 with Brighton, but the main talking point was the sending off of England midfielder Declan Rice. Both managers had contrasting views of the incident.

West Ham United

West Ham boss Julen Lopetegui speaking to BBC MOTD: “It is true City is one of the best teams around the world for sure, in history, but it is true too that in the second half we have been very close to a draw. I think we have played one very good second half. The start has been very good for us too, but against this kind of team if you make a mistake they don't forgive. This is the difference they have, one of the differences. A little mistake they punish you, they punish us. One bad moment for us.

“In my mind we started very well, being very aggressive, we have one plan, we know in this plan normally they have initiative, it's very difficult to not concede initiative then. That's why you have to do a lot of very good things to overcome them.

“In the second half we had chances, I think we kept the ball much more, much more, and didn't concede a lot of chances."

On Erling Haaland: “That’s right, they can score, make incredible actions showing one of the best players in the world. It was a pity because the team made a big effort. We have to improve, to know to compete against this kind of team to be close to perfection. Don't make mistakes, be calm, defend well, believe in you - we have quality players too. We are able to play, second half we did but we don’t take advantage of this good work in the second half.

“He is one of the best players in the world, that's why he plays for Manchester City. You have to compete with these kind of players. City has the power and the quality to create chances. Today I think the first goal was a pity for us but I’ve said it. I was happy with the performance think we were able to draw but again they damage us.”

Manchester City

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola to BBC Match of the Day: "It was open, we didn't finish actions and when they can run [Jarrod] Bowen, [Lucas] Paqueta and [Mohammed] Kudus through, it's dangerous. [Ilkay] Gundogan came in and we had the control back."

On Erling Haaland: "No words for him. All we can do is make him play better and better and give him as many balls as possible to the box. It's what we have to do. We are there and we added quality.

"This is a team. When you have to run backward, no one asks who has to do it. Everyone has to. When we see Erling doing that, it is fantastic.

On Julen Lopetegui: "He's a close friend and one of the most amazing managers I've met. All of the managers in their first season started well but we didn't win anything. It is a question of time and he will do it. We've had a friendship for many years and I wish him all the best."

Manchester City

Manchester City striker Erling Haaland to Sky Sports: "Three points is the most important thing so I'm happy. I feel good, I feel energised. I had a long vacation and pre-season. I feel good. The years I've been here have been really fast. Now I've got some rest in my body and my feet. Now I'm ready for more.

"Only footballers know how important it is to have a break. You need to calm your body and mind down because it's a long season. It's not as easy as people think. I feel fresh and that's the most important thing.

"I really like the second goal. I like all of them but the second one was lovely. A lovely ball from Rico [Lewis] and a perfect first touch. Top finish. It's good to get a little bit of power out of my body.

"This is what I've been doing my life with this movement, normally we don't meet these types of teams and they drop a lot more. West Ham needed a goal and the line was higher. It was a natural thing for me and I don't go offside. I haven't practiced this for many years.

"I feel more refreshed, more energised. When you do that you can practice some things you want to get better at outside of training. I feel good and I'm happy.

"Three games, nine points, it's a great start. Let's not get too far ahead because there are potentially 70 more games this season. Let's take it game by game."

Because of Haaland's acceleration, his pace is so good and his finishing, that's why teams don't press Man City really high.

Manchester City

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola to Sky Sports: "We played really good. West Ham are always dangerous. [Lucas] Paqueta can attack with [Mohammed] Kudus, the sense of danger is never over. We played really well, it was an unfortunate goal against. The second half was more open but we controlled it better and the performance is good. Officially the pre-season is now over. We played one game a week and it was a super season. Now they play two a week."

On Erling Haaland: "From the beginning he was unbelievable. The second goal, even the first. The third goal is something unique. With this mindset he has, everything he can do. The numbers with the short age and the games he's played. He's loved for what he does on the pitch.

"You have to let him do what he wants. He scored three goals today but he didn't lose one ball. Today is one of the games where he has played the best in all situations. When you see the games and see what we want to do, he understands because he is a smart guy. He wants to score goals."

West Ham have one win and two losses from their three league matches, both Ipswich Town and Wolves picked up their first point of the campaign, while Southampton and Everton each suffered their third defeats of the season.
