What is Stranger Things?

Created by the Duffer Brothers and Netflix, Stranger Things first came to our screens back in 2016. Set during the 1980s, the show follows a group of friends protecting one another from dark forces that have come to the fictional town of Hawkins, Indiana in America.

When a young girl, Eleven, gains telekinetic and supernatural powers, she opens a gateway between Earth and another dimension, which is dubbed "the Upside Down.” While we’ve watched the cast grow up before our eyes, we’ve also seen the show grow in popularity, becoming one of Netflix's biggest successes.

The series covers so many different genres – from sci-fi to mystery, horror and more. Stranger Things is only available for streaming on Netflix.

As set by the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC), it is set at a 15-age rating, meaning those watching the show should be 15 years or older. According to Netflix, this certificate was given due to the depiction of "sex, sex references, violence, injury detail, discrimination, threat, horror."

Stranger Things has transported viewers back in time to the 1980s – from making those who remember it feel nostalgic to introducing new generations to pieces of the past. There are so many 80s references that it would be impossible to list them all.

But many Stranger Things fans will love seeing everything from the fashions of the time to technology, games, music, film and more. Throughout the seasons, we see the cast dressed in everything from bold colours to plenty of denim, retro athletic wear and hair scrunchies.

As many of the characters are children, there’s also many 80s games and gadgets featured. This includes walkie-talkies, a magic 8 ball, a Sony Walkman cassette player and of course, the Dungeons & Dragons board game.

When it comes to film, season two sees Mike, Dustin, Lucas and Will dress up as the Ghostbusters, a famous 1984 movie, as well as Dustin and his girlfriend, Suzie duet to Limahl’s Never Ending Story, the title song for the 1984 film The NeverEnding Story.

Keeping with the music theme, Stranger Things also introduced new audiences to 80s classics Running Up That Hill by Kate Bush and Master of Puppets by Metallica. Decades on, the songs climbed the music charts again after Stranger Things.

There are also a number of 80s subcultures in Stranger Things – meaning a group of people who share a particular interest or belief which sets them apart from mainstream culture. For example, we see Dustin Henderson as a gamer, Steve Harrington as the jock, Eddie Munson as a punk rocker and Chrissy Cunningham as a cheerleader.

Stranger Things is jam-packed with so many amazing storylines, characters, action-led scenes and more - but throughout all the seasons, there are so many different themes to explore. At the heart of the story is friendship and the powerful connection between the main characters.

Not only have they grown up together, but they are also a team when it comes to fighting the supernatural forces that come their way. What stands out in the show is the presence of strong female characters, when it comes to gender roles and representations.

There is also a coming-of-age theme throughout, as we see characters develop their friendships and romances as they embark on adolescence. A lot of the characters also experience trauma, from remembering aspects of their childhood to the aftermath of the danger they have faced.

Another predominant theme in Stranger Things is good and evil and how different characters struggle with this. Set in the 80s, the series is steeped in nostalgia for viewers who remember that era.

But while it is a fictional story set in a fictional town, in a way, the show mirrors the paranoia of The Cold War during the 80s, in particular storylines surrounding Soviet threat and technology. The Cold War took place over four decades and was a period of tension between the United States of America (USA) and the Soviet Union (USSR).
