Explorers reach halfway point
The four set off from the Reform Club in London
Four explorers with disabilities who are trying to travel the world in 80 ways have reached the halfway point of their journey.
The group has travelled 6,400 miles to Penang, in Malaysia, following in the footsteps of the fictional character Phileas Fogg. However, the four are travelling using as many modes of transport as possible. Mike McKenzie, from Piddington, Oxfordshire, is a double-leg amputee who scuba dived in the Red Sea as part of the challenge. He said: "The important message we are trying to get across is how you can live life to the full and there are lots of things that people would like to do but never actually make the decision to do it. We've gone out and done it."
Also on the team is blind fund-raiser Caroline Casey, 30, the founder of the Dublin-based Aisling Foundation. Charities to benefit They set off from the Reform Club in central London on 2 September, the same club from where the fictional explorer began and ended his voyage. The money raised from the trip will go to various charities, including the Royal National Institute for the Blind, but 85% will be used for local causes. The remainder of the trek will include abseiling in Hong Kong, a tandem skydive in Las Vegas, a trip on a bullet train and a Chinese junk in Japan. Mr McKenzie, who is paralysed from the chest down, says he is willing to ride an ostrich, but joked: "I may need a lot of Velcro to keep me on." They will continue through south east Asia, Hong Kong, Japan and the United States to return to London by 3 December in time for the United Nations international day for disability.
