Bills piling up

"Our bills were thousands and thousands. There were so many bills coming in that I didn�t even worry about paying them."

And they had little money to pay them. Her husband had been unemployed for most of the previous year. Their unemployment benefits had run out, and they had fallen behind on their house payments.

As she rifled through the bills on her dining room table, one hospital bill alone came to $26,000.
