Blackpool centenarian rides rollercoasters

Despite being 100, Mrs Thompson tries all the rides
The boss of Blackpool Pleasure Beach will celebrate her 100th birthday still ready to test rides at the resort.

Despite reaching her century on Sunday, Doris Thompson has continued testing all the new white-knuckle rides throughout her 90s.

As chair of the pleasure beach she has even tested the likes of the "Playstation" ride with former members of pop band Boyzone.

However, despite the rides becoming more sophisticated over the years, Mrs Thompson said nothing beats riding on a wooden rollercoaster.

'Incredible' influence

She told BBC North West Tonight: "Wood lives and gives a bit."

As well as testing the rides however, her son Geoffrey said his mother is also still fully involved in the day-to-day running of the resort.

He said: "She still has strong views on the sort of shows and entertainment we have here, that it should be family-based.

"For example, any of the comedians that appear in our shows are not allowed to swear."

Her grandson, Nick, said Mrs Thompson has been an "incredibly positive" influence on him.

"Just seeing her everyday at the park and how hard she works at the pleasure beach and within the community has been a great influence," he said.

"She is just unbelievably energetic and full of life."
