Fears over Toshiba factory
Toshiba blames the losses on tough trading conditions
Union officials are meeting managers from Toshiba amid fears over the future of the firm's Plymouth plant.
About 200 staff are being made redundant by the company because of "tough trading conditions". Unions were told of the job losses at the television manufacturing plant in the Ernesettle area of the city on Friday. The first staff from the 650-strong workforce are expected to be laid off in February. Consultation period Unions and managers are meeting to discuss the move. Sue Sawyer from the union Amicus said: "The reaction was total shock at the volume of the 200 job losses. "The meeting will hopefully clarify what can be done." The company said there will be a 90-day consultation period and it is committed to the city as the centre of its European consumer operation. Earlier this year, Toshiba switched some of its production abroad where costs are lower.
