Derek was injured during a training exercise just four days before D-Day, which meant he wasn't able to take part in the operation. While he now sees this as proof that he has indeed lived a charmed life, back then he very much wanted to 'see some action'. Derek also spares a thought for the countless friends he lost on D-Day.
